The Compassion of People We Don't Know: How a Man I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Land the Job That Transformed My Existence

During the late 1980s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a travel partner. Since my companion was considering enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had arranged a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We reached the student accommodation, a big ten-floor structure on the UWS named International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, sat down, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He inquired what I did for a living, and I shared that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been performing experiments with electron microscopy.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – close to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I consider applying for a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The engineering student walked over to me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but immediately informed my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where anything feels possible – she responded: “We can make that happen. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his name, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in multiple respects. I didn't possess the confidence or self-assurance to reach out at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

Critically, that job in New York led me to a role in Europe where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
